The Divided Loyalties of Glúrkub the Goblin
"I remember how it all began...."

Background

Glúrkub has a tale to tell... but how much of it can be believed

Objective 1

Muzmák is waiting to speak with you.

Muzmák: 'Are you sure this plan of yours is going to work, goblin? I'm taking a real risk siding with you, and it'll be our heads if we're discovered!
'The dragon who commands the hobgoblins might be trapped behind the Anvil of Winterstith, but that has not decreased their numbers here! They're pushing us out, Orcs and goblins both! I don't like it. And why hasn't Gorgar stood up to them? Bah.'
Muzmák peers around suspiciously and lowers his voice.
'So the plan is still on? We'll join the next raiding party heading south, and once free of the mountains we'll slip away? We'll set up somewhere far from Gundabad, far from Gorgar, and far from these accursed hobgoblins? Okay. I've chosen three others who might join us. Speak to them and see what you think, goblin. Their names are Shulgolb, Lumbag, and Zogmauk, and they're all here in Durshulot.'

Objective 2

  • Listen to Muzmák in Durshulot

Muzmák is waiting to speak with you.

Muzmák says, "One more thing, Glúrkub."
Muzmák says, "If you betray me..."
Muzmák says, "...or if any of your buddies get cold feet and turn me in..."
Muzmák says, "Let's just say you don't want to do that."
Muzmák says, "It would go very badly for you, goblin."
Muzmák says, "You want Muzmák for a friend, trust me."
Muzmák says, "So you stick to the plan."
It was a good plan. All of my plans are good plans!'

Objective 3

Muzmák gave you the names of three similar-minded residents of Durshulot who might help you escape from the growing conflict beneath Gundabad.

Lumbag: 'Count me in, Glúrkub. This place won't be safe for us when the hobgoblins take over!
'Who plants to lead the raiding-party we will join? Natsatúg? Ah, that is good to know. It won't be easy, but I think I can get my hands on some of the badges his boys wear when they leave the mountain. You know the ones, with the thunderclouds on 'em?
'We'll blend right in, and when we're safely in the country we'll slip away for our better lives. It's a good plan.'
Of course it was a good plan!
Shulgolb: 'You're part of Muzmák's gang, eh? If we get found out I'm tellin' Gorgar it was all his idea. Are you okay with that, Glúrkub?
'Then I'm in. Gorgar is losing his power to the hobgoblins, day by day. Won't be good for any of us to still be here when he loses the last of it!'
Zogmauk: 'I could join your little band, it's true.
'Or I could turn you and your friends in for traitors and cowards!'
  • Defeat Zogmauk
Zogmauk says, "You're dead, goblin!"
Zogmauk says, "I give up, I give up! Your secret is safe with me!"
None can survive the surprising strength of might Glúrkub!
No, I didn't kill him. I just scared him a little, and it was enough!

Objective 4

  • Talk to Muzmák in Durshulot

Muzmák is waiting to speak with you.

Muzmák: 'Are they with us? Ah, I wondered about Zogmauk. At least he has been dealt with before he could cause us any more-'
Muzmák suddenly stops speaking.
'What is that? Someone comes!'

Objective 5

  • Remain alert during Gorgar's inspection

An unexpected visitor has interrupted your plans.

Muzmák says, "Gorgar!"
Gorgar the Ruthless says, "I am looking for a goblin."
Gorgar's Bodyguard says, "Goblins! Line up!"
Gorgar the Ruthless says, "You there! The short one! Come here!"

Objective 6

  • Talk to Gorgar the Ruthless

Gorgar has chosen you for some unknown purpose.

Gorgar the Ruthless: 'I need you to come with me, goblin. You are just what I need for my purposes.'
Gorgar scowls at the line of goblins, every one of whom wears a relieved expression.
'I have seen the glint of mithril inside an old tomb, but the entrance is sealed by a great rock-fall. No Orc can make it through the opening, and it might be too small for most goblins. But you, I think, will serve. You will bring me this treasure, and be rewarded by Gorgar the Generous.'

Objective 7

  • Carry out Gorgar's plan

Gorgar has need of a goblin to acquire a valuable treasure for him.

It wasn't a question. It was a command

Objective 8

  • Collect the mithril treasure sought by Gorgar

Gorgar believes there is a mithril treasure in the room on this side of the rock-fall.

SHINY HAMMER: "This hammer is so shiny. It must be worth a lot!"

Objective 9

  • Continue working for Gorgar

Acquiring the mithril hammer for Gorgar was only the beginning.

It was a hammer, a shiny hammer made of precious mithril
I was rewarded for it. I became Gorgar's most trusted lieutenant
It had been a good plan. But plans change

Objective 10

  • Command Ránulur to fight on behalf of Gorgar

Gorgar the Ruthless has sent you to command the loyalty of Ránulur, Chieftain of Wargs.

I did Gorgar's bidding in all things... no matter how dangerous
Ránulur: 'What did you say? A great force of dwarves approaches the mountain? Even now they near Eldersalde, and Gorgar commands that I fight on his behalf?'

Objective 11

  • Carry out the wishes of Gorgar the Ruthless

You served Gorgar faithfully and well.

Ránulur says, "I am Ránulur, Chieftain of Wargs! I serve no Orc!"
Ránulur says, "Why should I not devour you in a single gulp, goblin?"
Pack-brother says, "That might be unwise, my lord."
Pack-brother says, "This goblin has been elevated by Gorgar."
Pack-brother says, "If Gorgar wins this power struggle..."
Ránulur says, "He cannot best the hobgoblins, let alone an army of dwarves."
Ránulur says, "I will answer his call, goblin."
Ránulur says, "For now."
I could see which way the skull was rolling
I needed a new plan

Objective 12

The War of Three Peaks is underway!

Muzmák: 'We are taking a big risk trusting you again, Glúrkub. How are we to know you don't plan to trick us, and turn us in to Gorgar?
'Pox and maggots, there's nothing for it. We'll fight through the dwarf-lines and make for freedom... and if you betray us, Glúrkub, I'll see that you die for it!'
Muzmák says, "This is our last test, boys!"
Muzmák says, "If we want our freedom, we've got to fight for it!"
Muzmák says, "Lumbag"
Muzmák says, "Shulgolb"
Muzmák says, "Glúrkub"
Muzmák says, "These dwarves stand between us and escape! Kill them all!"
Lumbag says, "Kill the Dwarves!"
Shulgolb says, "Death to the Dwarves!"
  • Slay many dwarves during the War of Three Peaks
Actually... let's skip this part
Durin snorts. 'Good idea,' he says

Objective 13

  • Continue your flight from the war

You ran far from the battle-lines, eventually finding yourself on distant snowfields.

Anyway, in time we found ourselves far from the battle, on a distant snowfield

Objective 15

  • Talk to Muzmák as he catches his breath

You have run with Muzmák from the War of Three Peaks... but how far will be enough?

Muzmák: 'This is... this is not far enough...
'We have to... we have to keep going...'
  • Follow Muzmák further across the snowfield
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'I am free! I am freeeee!'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'Now the extent of my vengeance shall be known!'

Objective 16

Hrímil Frost-heart has emerged from her icy prison behind the Anvil of Winterstith!

Muzmák says, "Hrímil Frost-heart!"
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'Who speaks to me?'
Muzmák says, "We were the defenders of Gundabad, mighty one..."
Muzmák says, "But now a dwarf army lays siege to the mountain! That place is lost!"
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'Pitiful, unthinking insects.'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'The dwarves do nothing I have not commanded!'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'It was I who spoke to their prince through the ice!'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'It was I who planted the thought of this conquest in his mind!'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'He is powerless to resist my Dragon-Voice!'
Muzmák says, "Can it be?"
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'Follow me, my new subjects.'
Hrímil Frost-heart: 'Follow me to Gundabad, and the final defeat of the dwarves!'

Objective 17

  • Talk to Muzmák

Muzmák stands in silence upon the snowfield.

Muzmák: 'If what the Dragon has said is true... the dwarves are doomed to fail. Do we flee from certain victory, Glúrkub?'
Muzmák stares into the sky.
'We should return to Gundabad. I do not know what ever compelled us to leave. That is our place. The new Lord of Gundabad commands it.'

Objective 18

  • Return to Gundabad

Muzmák stands in silence upon the snowfield.

I told you, didn't I?
Sometimes... sometimes plans change
